Columbia County NY Senior Photographer | What to Wear for your Senior Portrait Session

This post is part of a week-long series answering the most common questions about JenniWaka Photography. See previous blog posts about senior session packages and what to expect of your senior session.

Perhaps only second to choosing prom attire, deciding what to wear for your Senior Portrait Session can seem like a huge deal. Should you dress up or be casual? Wear something trendy or stick to more conservative options? Appease your parents or go your own route? Making a decision can be overwhelming.

Let me start by saying that you don't have to choose just one style. I offer three different levels of Senior Portrait Sessions with different numbers of outfits included in each. Depending on what you and your family are envisioning, that could mean a formal outfit plus a casual one, or something funky plus something traditional, or a sports uniform plus a letter jacket...or even all of the above!

I do have a few tips to help you plan your outfits, though. Remember, there are no hard and fast rules so if you want to break these and show your own unique style and personality, by all means go right ahead! But if you're not sure, try these tips:

1. Choose clothing that fits well and that you're confident and comfortable in. I want you to enjoy your session without worrying about whether or not you can move around. If it's tighter or skimpier than you usually dress, it will probably be hard to relax and look natural in your photos. Likewise, if something is too baggy or slips around, it will not make for a fun shoot. Choose something that is tailored to you and makes you feel amazing!

2. When it comes to colors and prints, these days anything goes. But if you're unsure, it's best to go with solids and more neutral colors. Pure white and neon colors, for example, show up so bright on camera that they draw the eye away from what's important--your face! Likewise, white gym socks and sneakers, unless they're a fashion statement, can be quite distracting to the eye.

3. I know I just said solids and subdued colors are a good idea, but you still want to have some fun with your outfits. This is where layers and accessories come in! If you have a flashy necklace or vibrant scarf that you really love, bring it and we can do some photos with and without it. The same goes for vests, jackets, belts, hats, shoes...whatever layering pieces you can think of! Let's show off your style!

I pride myself on being a very hands-on, full-service photographer. That means I'm here to help you from the beginning to the end--including choosing what you will wear for our session. If you want me to come to your home and go through your wardrobe with you, I will!! If you want to send me a dozen selfies wearing different items from your closet, please do!! If you want to create a private Pinterest board with me to dream up what kind of outfits you'll wear for your session, I'm in!! Lean on me and trust my eye for showing off your unique beauty. Together we'll create senior portraits that are truly awesome, and truly YOU!
